persuade the Japanese to render assistance to shipwrecked American whalers and to consent to the coming of some American merchants" (Iriye, 1991). As the world has transformed itself, "both
Americans and Asians have played major roles in the transformation" (Iriye, 1991). But recent years have resulted in a stale Japanese economy-mostly because of the original tensions between the
U.S. and Japan, which have turned to economic warfare rather than military. The only appropriate response is creating an open dialogue on the issue so that solutions can emerge.
During the 19th century, trade increased substantially because of the desire of the U.S. to expand its industrial sales in the Asian market. Additionally, American
Protestantism compelled missionaries to travel to Asia, where they mostly had the effect of introducing the ideas of education for women and other religio-cultural ideas (Iriye, 1991). These ties
have helped maintain a dialogue between the two countries, which have often been strained by political tensions. Leading up to and during the Spanish American War (1993-1998), the U.S.
interceded in a number of uprisings, most particularly in the Philippines and Hawaii. When Japan wanted to protect its immigrants to Hawaii, the U.S. annexed the islands and prepared
for war with Japan (Iriye, 1991). With the annexation of these two countries, American security in the pacific "became partially dependent upon the
geopolitical situation in Asia . . . especially Japans rapid naval buildup, penetration of the Asian continent, and alliance . . . with Britain" (Iriye, 1991). This, of course,
