surely a major player in world events. It has led the way in electronic growth as well as the growth of the automobile. It is a fascinating country that not
only holds its own around bigger Western nations, but also a simple nation that offers many Westerners new ideas that range from religion to gardening. With that in mind the
following paper examines some of the basic information regarding Japan. The paper examines issues such as population, agriculture, environment, and energy. Japan "Japan is one of the most
densely populated nations in the world, with some 330 persons per square kilometer (almost 860 persons per sq. mi.). For 1997, the population growth rate was about 0.23%" (Nation by
Nation, 2003). However, in the past few years it seems that "Japans low population growth rate...has raised concerns about the social implications of an aging population" (Nation by Nation, 2003).
Within the population of Japan we note that, "About 750,000 Koreans and much smaller groups of Chinese and Caucasians reside in Japan" (Nation by Nation, 2003). Aside from being
one of the most densely populated places in the world, Japan is also "the worlds fourth largest energy consumer and second largest energy importer (after the United States). Over the
past decade, Japan has been experiencing a period of slow economic growth, and has taken important steps towards economic deregulation and restructuring" (EIA, 2003). Because Japan has experiences a slow
economic growth their demand for energy has been relatively stagnant. "Oil consumption has stabilized after several years of decline, but is still 9% below its 1996 peak level" (EIA, 2003).
In relationship to their economy, we note that it "has resumed modest growth in 2003 after stalling in 2001 and 2002 due to weak demand for Japanese exports.
