life. Her name is Janie and all she wants, it seems, is to find happiness with a family, through marriage. The following paper discusses her journey as it relates to
men and analyzes why she finds such happiness with Tea Cake when he is still yet a man who abuses her. Janie and Men Janies story is one
that sees Janie through many experiences and many levels of oppression. In the beginning she finds herself married to a man who she does not particularly care for. She dreams
of a relationship that is beautiful and fulfilling, a lie that has been told to her through societys insistence that she have a man. She is threatened by her husband
at one point, and she has another man waiting to marry her. She marries this man, Joe, and they move to a town that Joe commences to alter. He opens
a store and becomes incredibly prosperous, but insists that Janie never show how beautiful she is. He is enchanted by her hair, her one glorious asset, and insists she keep
it covered. He insists she remain in the house and do nothing but the household chores. He oppresses her and keeps her confined out of jealousy. Things get worse
as he begins to physically and emotionally abuse her. She eventually comes to a point where she strikes back at him, arguing that he is wrong. This, however does not
change things, and she remains oppressed for the most part. He eventually dies and she meets a man named Tea, the man who will be her true love. They leave
the area together and head out to work in a community where other African Americans are struggling to make a living. Again, however, Janie is usually a threat to the
