who has made the best of what life has to offer her, and we understand her to be a very kind and generous woman. However, upon closer examination we find that she is fairly judgmental of the people she meets, examining their position, their stature, their looks, and all the while seemingly presenting us with a woman who is somewhat self righteous and perhaps somewhat of a snob. In the following paper we examine Janes first encounters with three different individuals. The paper examines her judgements of Adele, Mrs. Fairfax, and Blanche Ingram. In these examinations we will note that Janes judgements were not always kind. Adele Adele is to be Janes student. When Jane first meets her we find that the little girl can only speak French, something Jane is proud she knows. We note that Jane ahs allowed the girl to finish her breakfast and then notes how "Descending from her chair, she came and placed herself on my knee; then, folding her little hands demurely before her, shaking back her curls and lifting her eyes to the ceiling, she commenced singing a song from some opera. It was the strain of a forsaken lady, who, after bewailing the perfidy of her lover, calls pride to her aid; desires her attendant to deck her in her brightest jewels and richest robes, and resolves to meet the false one that night at a ball, and prove to him, by the gaiety of her demeanour, how little his desertion has affected her" (Bronte 133-134). We note a sense of condescension concerning the demeanor of the little girl, as it comes from Jane. We imagine a somewhat spoiled and precious little girl.
