novel. However, at the same time the character of Jane is one who is incredibly rational, as are many of the other characters in the novel. While it is clearly
a romantic tale that has darkness and struggle, it is also a rational story that focuses on the need for rational thought and logical action. And, both the logical and
rational conditions are clearly seen in the character of Jane. In light of this arguing whether Jane is romantic or rational becomes somewhat difficult because both sides could clearly and
strongly be argued. However, the following paper will argue that Jane is more romantic than rational. The paper uses the first two chapters of Brontes novel to illustrate how the
novel introduces us to Jane as a young child with romantic notions and a young child portrayed by Bronte as living the painful existence of romance. Jane as
a Romantic We see young Janes situation in the house of her aunt and cousins as an incredibly oppressive and depressing one. It is also a life that is quite
frightening at times, leaving Jane with little ability to find a logical or reasonable perspective. In essence, we find ourselves sympathizing with her and her fears, especially considering the treatment
she receives by her cousins, John in particular: "John had not much affection for his mother and sisters, and an antipathy to me. He bullied and punished me; not two
or three times in the week, nor once or twice in the day, but continually: every nerve I had feared him, and every morsel of flesh in my bones shrank
