unloved, and a young woman who is strong, intelligent and determined. It is a story of romance, honesty, intrigue, and pursuit of happiness. The following paper examines the themes of
self-image v self-respect and love v servitude within Brontes novel. The paper then compares and contrasts the story of Jane Eyre with Cinderella. Self-Image v Self-Respect Jane, at
a very early age, learns that her self-image is something that is very fragile for beginning as a child she was constantly berated and essentially abused emotionally by her aunt
and her cousins. As she grew she realized that perhaps self-respect was the most important thing she could pursue because she truly only had herself to rely on. If she
was worried about her image, she would not be paying attention to the things she felt were most important. Whatever she did in her life it was important that she
behaved in a manner wherein she could always respect herself. As a young girl she seems more concerned with her image, but as she becomes a woman she realizes
that her self-respect is what will truly develop her into a woman she can be proud of. At one point, when thinking unkind things about Grace Poole we see Jane
focus on her self-respect: "I hastened to drive from my mind the hateful notion I had been conceiving respecting Grace Poole; it disgusted me. (Chapter XVI). It disgusted her because
it weakened her self-respect. She could not be happy with herself is she thought negative thoughts about others. She needed her self-respect in order to thrive and grow and develop.
