as a fairy tale" would imply that Bronte has, at some point in the narrative, abandoned her early thematic structure and opted instead for the kind of fanciful conclusion which might appeal to the sentimental, the archetypal "happy ending". However, to take this view would require negating many of the darker elements of the story and the atypically independent and autonomous character of Jane herself, and would cast her in a sort of "Cinderella" mould, which does not square with the progression of the narrative as a whole. As Steyer (2004) points out, Jane Eyre has been hailed as one of the first feminist novels, despite the fact that there is "not a hint in the book of any desire for political, legal, educational, or even intellectual equality between the sexes" (Steyer, 2004, PG). What Bronte does present, however, is a female character who does not conform to the traditional Victorian pattern of social roles: Janes early life, and her need to be self-sufficient in order to survive economically, mean that she has managed to avoid many of the traps of social convention and develop her own ethical values, and her own way of interacting with the world around her. Is this a realistic portrayal of a woman of the time? Perhaps not, if we equate realism with typicality - we are not expected to view Jane as representative of Victorian women in general.
