to the American social landscape (Stansell 30). This same Jane Addams - the dreamer and idealist who sought to transform her vision of American social democracy into reality -
would likely fare very well in the political climate of the twenty-first century. Women politicians are finally gaining long overdue acceptance at the national level, and the buzzwords of
change and idealism are staples in the eloquent rhetoric of the Democratic presidential nominee who also would have seemed an unlikely candidate a few short years ago, Sen. Barack Obama.
Like Obama, Addams was based in Chicago, but was born and raised in Cedarville to pioneer parents who embodied the American Dream for people living in the nineteenth century (Stevenson
1). Her father and role model parlayed a successful milling business career into an equally successful career as an Illinois senator, during which time he worked tirelessly to improve
the states educational and corrections systems (Stevenson 1). Unlike her female contemporaries but very much in keeping with todays young women, Addams received a college education and used her
inheritance to travel abroad. The sights she witnessed would change her life. With the assistance of her friend Ellen Gates Starr, she would apply what she learned in
England to assist the immigrants and impoverished classes of Chicago (Stevenson 1). The two women opened the Hull House in 1888, which provided a welcome respite for poor and
homeless adults and children. The house also provided these individuals with scholastic and vocational education, an on-site daycare for employed mothers, library, and art gallery (Stevenson 1). Through
