different in so many ways, they were actually born the very same year, 1860, and within a month of one another. The following paper looks at these two powerfully historic
figures, comparing and contrasting the two unique and strong individuals. Jane Addams and Annie Oakley As mentioned, both Jane Addams and Annie Oakley (born Phoebe Ann Oakley Mozee)
were born the same year, with Jane being born on September 6 and Annie on August 13. Jane was born in Illinois and Annie in Ohio. In this we can
perhaps see that their societies were similar in that their location in the nation was similar. However, life and circumstances were quite different for the two. Jane was born into
a household that was stable and was very educated in an intellectual manner it would seem. Annie was born into a former Quaker family and at a relatively early age
she was essentially put into a life of servitude away from her family. Jane, on the other hand, born into a wealthy family, moved forward and was one of few
women in her time to graduate from college. "Annie did not attend school" (Annie Oakley, 2004). Their childhoods were obviously quite different and as such we see that their
level of education and their directions in life would be different as well. At an early age, the age of nine it seems, Annie discovered that she could shoot any
gun incredibly well and she did so to help support her mother and family (Annie Oakley, 2004). "She quickly proved to be a dead shot and word spread so much
that at age sixteen, Annie went to Cincinnati to enter a shooting contest with Frank E. Butler (1850-1926), an accomplished marksman" (Annie Oakley, 2004). She won the match and also
