situations and behaviors that are part of common experience. In other words, Thurber writes about ordinary experience, but he does so in a manner that shows the absurdity of life
as well as providing a character with whom his readers can identify. In "University Days," Thurber describes his greatest trials and tribulations in obtaining a degree from Ohio State.
He begins by describing botany and how, no matter how much he tried or how many times he adjusted his microscope, he was never able to see the magnified cell
structure that he was suppose to draw and study. While the other students were all busily drawing, Thurber was left to flounder and try, once again, to convince the professor
that he really could not see anything through this instrument. This does not sound as if the situation is very funny, but
Thurbers prose makes is hilarious as he describes the irate anger of the professor who believes he is simply being obstinate and his own inept confusion. Thurbers description of the
professors temper tantrum when Thurber finally sees something in the microscope and it turns out to be a reflection of his eye is truly hilarious. Next Thurber
describes his economic class and the perplexed foot player who has difficulty naming one means of transportation. Again, the humor of the description is grounded in the familiar, as everyone
has met someone who just like that football player, gifted at athletics, but struggling in virtually every other way. Thurber then turns to a description of what he terms his
