of which is "The Boarding House." In this story, it is overwhelmingly apparent that Mrs. Mooney was a good mother trying to do what is best for her daughter.
Polly was Mr. and Mrs. Mooneys daughter, and Jack was there son. There are several instances in the story when Mrs. Mooney does what she thinks is best
for her young daughter. The first is when she separated from her husband, got custody of the children, and opened the boarding house. The second is when she
sent Polly to work as a typist in a corn-factor office. The third is when she took Polly away from the typing job. The fourth is when she
allowed Polly to work at the boarding house. The fifth is when Mrs. Mooney decided that Polly and Mr. Doran must marry because they had been sexually intimate.
Mrs. Mooney and her husband had an amiable relationship until Mrs. Mooneys father died. At that point, Mr. Mooney became a no-good drunk.
Mrs. Mooney, being the good mother that she was, left her husband after he became physically abusive to her. The priest gave Mrs. Mooney a legal separation from
Mr. Mooney because of his atrocious act of violence. One must conclude that Mrs. Mooney was not only in fear for herself, but also for her children, and thus,
Polly. Mrs. Mooney had no choice but to take her children out of such a situation. Raising a young daughter around a drunken man prone to violence is
not an appropriate situation. Mrs. Mooney knew that. Mrs. Mooney managed the boarding house well. She was a shrewd businesswoman.
