The relationships that exist between and among religion, politics and family within the literary boundaries of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
are wholly interconnected with that of the Daedalus myth. Stephen is no more able to abandon the oppressive hand of religion than he is can walk away from his
family, inasmuch as the two entities are represented as single being. Clearly, the political ramifications of the authors writing twist together with issues of family and religion in order
to comprise both the underlying and obvious social connotations as they also exist in the Daedalus myth. In Chapter 4 Stephen is astounded
to discover that Father Dolan and Father Commee are hypocrites and the church is actually a stifling environment. While the thoughts of becoming a Jesuit Priest at some level
appeal to Stephen, it is perhaps only because it would make his choices easier; that is, after all, what had been taught to him all his life, what he had
been groomed to do. To not become one would mean breaking free and telling everyone he knows that he could not do what had been expected of him all
along. This would not be an easy task but one that mirrors the same struggle Icarus and Daedalus face in the myth. When Stephen spies a beautiful young woman
