the context of what came before them, that we are all the products of our past, both as a society and individually. The story concerns Gabriel Conroy, his thoughts and
feelings as he attends an annual Christmas party given by his aunts, and, later, in his hotel room, when he is alone with his wife, Gretta. Joyces narrative style makes
the reader privy to Gabriels most intimate recollections and observations, which serves to demonstrate how he is affected by those long dead. This intertwining of the living and the dead
reaches its climax when Gretta reveals her inner-most thoughts, causing Gabriel to experience an epiphany of understanding concerning the duality that forms the central theme of the narrative. Joyce
begins his narrative by filling the reader in on the background of Gabriels aunts, Miss Kate and Miss Julia Morkan, who live with their niece Mary Jane, and the history
of their annual Christmas dance, which has been a tradition for thirty years. Joyce states that they began the dances after their brother died and they moved to the "gaunt
house on Ushers Island" (Joyce). According to Anspaugh, even this detail contributes to the overarching theme of how the dead affect the living (1). This critic points out that,
like Poes "The Casks of Amontillado," Joyces "The Dead" contains many "Gothic themes and motifs" (1). For one thing, the time of the story is Yuletide, which is a traditional
season for recounting ghost stories (Anspaugh 1). Furthermore, the reference to the "dark gaunt house on Ushers Island" has a distinctly Gothic tone. Furthermore, phrases such as "three
