issues that Joyce presented in relationship to Dublin. In her story one sees many historical and cultural elements that make up the context of his story. The following paper examines
the context of this story. James Joyces Eveline In first examining the story it is perhaps important to put the story
into the context that is the entire work itself. Many people argue that this particular collection of stories follows the path of growth in an individuals life. It is a
collection that begins with childhood stories, then stories of adolescence, followed by stories of being a young agult and then stories that tell of older age experiences. One author notes
that, "the scheme of Dubliners is a series of pairs of stories on the themes of: adolescent life, sporting life, artistic life, amorous life, political life, religious life, and celibate
life (male and female), plus four petty employees (two married and two unmarried), plus the final story on holiday life" (Barger). It is
also important to note something of Joyces take on the stories, comments he had made about them. In 1904 he is quoted as saying, or writing, "I call the series
Dubliners to betray the soul of that hemiplegia or paralysis which many consider a city" A year later he noted that he was sure the Dublin paper would object to
his stories of Dublin life, and "I think people might be willing to pay for the special odour of corruption which, I hope, floats over my stories" (Barger). In this
