global concerns. The following paper examines the theology, and the evolution of the theology, of James Cone. James H. Cone: Theologian
One of the most profound statements and arguments that Cone has every stated involves the fact that God is black, creating, as would be imagined, a great deal of controversy.
However, he ultimately stated that if God created man in his image, and there are black people, then surely God is also black as much as he is white.1 The
point is that if man was made in Gods image then God is many things, not just white as the general population would presume, or present.
"James Cone was born in Fordyce, Arkansas in 1939 and grew up in the small town of Bearden. There he experienced the life-affirming community of the
black Church alongside the soul-crushing reality of white racism."2 Through this childhood of learning he was able to learn how to deal with the contradictory nature of life in a
society that was clearly not a society created by him, or his people.3 It is interesting to note that in his home
town there were 800 white people and 400 white people but that the society there ascertained and enforced the fact that black people were created by God to be servants
