His literary career began at the late age of thirty years old, in spite of the fact that he harbored an intense interest in reading just about everything that came
his way. A most peculiar aspect of Coopers writing career addresses the fact that male authors were considered out of the norm for that period; the early nineteenth century
was known far better for its female writers, as a "social stigma" (Taylor, 1996, p. 21) was attached to any men who put forth any interest in writing. This
is one reason why Precaution, his initial attempt at composing a book, was met with rather dismal results. However, as time went on, Cooper focused more heartily upon his
craft, as well as American issues, which served to thrust him into the literary world (Taylor, 1996). Cooper was born in 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey, as a Federalist judges
son. Soon after, however, the family relocated to a frontier settlement in central New York State named after the judge: Cooperstown. It is here, where Cooper spent his
youth, that it is said he gained the insight to life and wilderness that eventually expressed themselves so eloquently within his many books. His was a privileged life and
one of which he did not take advantage; Cooper appreciated all that was afforded to him. One of the most influential aspects of his formative years was the soft
hand his mother used in raising her son. This obviously helped to cultivate the compassion the burned inside Coopers later works. Setting
