to a full-on torture sequence in his latest outing, taking the films out of the light escapist category and into a new, darker realm. This paper explores the evolution of
the Bond films over the past 40 years. Discussion Why has Bond gotten more violent? Thats really not very difficult to answer. There would appear to be two primary reasons:
first, society has gotten more violent, and second, we have become progressively desensitized to violence in films, so that it takes more and more blood and gore to shock us,
or even to get our attention. Every day we hear a critic bemoaning the increasing level of violence in films, and wondering where it will stop. The response from the
studios is usually that if people didnt like this stuff and refused to see it, theyd stop making it. And unfortunately theyre probably right, which means the answer lies in
our violent society. The problem of violence in society has many causes, all of which are beyond the scope of this paper. What we need to realize is that the
society is violent and the films reflect that. Bond is also, in truth, an anti-hero. Hes supposedly a "good guy," but in reality hes basically a hired killer. Stripped of
his fancy title and the protection afforded him by the British government, hes nothing more than a gunslinger. The genius of the franchise is that Bond always goes up against
