And, then there are those works which we know, from the beginning, are semi autobiographical and this clearly gives a kind of an edge in understanding the story better. In essence, if we know something of the author of a story we are reading we can gain a deeper insight into the story itself, a deeper understanding of the conditions the story addresses. This is very much the case with the author James Baldwin and his story "Sonnys Blues." The following paper examines how we can understand his story better by knowing something of his life. James Baldwin and "Sonnys Blues" "Sonnys Blues" is the story of two brothers in Harlem. They are two young men who have tried to find their way in life, with Sonny essentially losing out in a world he cannot perhaps understand or deal with. The setting of Harlem is incredibly significant when we know that the author was born and grew up in the same area. This is a very unique place in our society and people who grew up in Harlem often have experiences and stories that most people could never understand.
