the following paper offers an examination of the two religions, followed by a brief comparison and contrast of the two. Taoism The word "Tao," when translated into English
means, roughly, the path or the way. It is believed that it cannot be defined, only experienced. In essence, it "refers to a power which envelops, surrounds and flows through
all things, living and non-living. The Tao regulates natural processes and nourishes balance in the Universe" as well as embodying the hormonios existence of opposite, such as light and dark,
male and female, love and hate (Anonymous Taoism taoism.htm). It is believed that the founder of the religion was Lao-Tse, who lived from 604-531 BCE (Anonymous Taoism). He
was considered to be a contemporary of the famous wise man, Confucius (Anonymous Taoism). It is also believed that he found this method of approach when trying to discover a
way out of the feudal wars and conflicts that were such a powerful part of society during his life. "Others," however, "believe that he is a mythical character" (Anonymous Taoism
taoism.htm). As for the primary beliefs of this religion we find that Tao is believed to be the first cause of the universe, it is believed to be "a
force that flows through all life," and it is believed that "Each believers goal is to become one with the Tao" (Anonymous Taoism taoism.htm). They possess no God, but believe
that Tao is manifested through many gods. The religion does not involve itself in prayer, as there is no deity that can be prayed to. Instead they choose to find
