In 1988, the story of Escalante and his students was further immortalized through the motion picture Stand and Deliver, which chronicled the 1982 success. Escalante came to America in 1963 and was originally a native of La Paz, Bolivia. His father, Zenobio, was alcoholic and abusive, which forced his mother to fleet first to the small village of Achacachi, which east of Lake Titicaca, and then to La Paz (Jagodzinski, 2001). Escalante followed her soon after. He was nine years old and has no memories of his father except as someone who hit and criticized him (Jagodzinski, 2001), Escalantes father died when he was fourteen. In his biography of Escalante, Matthews (1988) states that he never mourned his fathers death. He grew up as a tough street kid who enjoyed fighting and laying handball for money (Jagodzinski, 2001). However, even before he had graduated as a teacher, he was already teaching mathematics at three separate institutions: San Calixto (in the morning); National Bolivar High School (in the afternoon); and Commercial High School (at night) (Jagodzinski, 2001). As a teacher, Escalante modeled himself "hard" men such as his science teacher at Bolivar High School, Tito Melean (Jagodzinski, 2001, p. 232). This teacher was in the habit of carrying around a long, thick, bone from the leg of some large mammal, with which he would threaten his students. Escalante was hard, also; so much so, that he failed his two brothers, Felix and Raul, because t hey copied from others when taking Escalantes exam (Jagodzinski, 2001).
