a small crew down the Mississippi River (PG). According to Engels, this expedition was a link in the chain of occurrences that led to Louisiana territory having belonged to
the French (Engels PG). Father Jacques Marquette was a Jesuit priest. Although Father Marquette was born in France, he was sent to
Quebec in order to set up a mission, which allowed him to work with the Huron Indians. Once the Huron Indians were attacked by the Sioux, and the fled
the area. Father Marquette followed the Huron Indians (Engels PG). In the West Lower Peninsula of Michigan, there is the Pere Jacques Marquette monument. It is a
large cross overlooking the harbor. It is thought that Father Marquette died on this spot in 1675 (Anonymous PG). Although there were
only rumors at the time, there was discussion among the French that a large river flowed in the south. This river was thought to be a possible link to
the Pacific Ocean. When Louis Jolliet went to look for this river, the person chosen for the position of "chaplain and missionary of the expedition" was Father Marquette (Engels
PG). The party consisted of seven men who traveled from Lake Michigan to Green Bay. Then they went by canoe up the Fox River.
