his time, utilizing the methods of his era and standing as a powerful influence for painters that were to come. Jacob Lawrence is a painter who was quite powerful
during the Harlem Renaissance and still stands today as one of the most powerful African American painters in the nation. His work is, in many ways, very powerful in a
way that is not dissimilar to that of Matisse. His utilization of many different genres of painting and his bright and vivid images give the viewer impressions that are similar
to Matisse in many ways. The following paper looks at two paintings from each painter, discussing the similarities. The paintings examined are Matisses The Painters Family (1911) and The Moroccans

In this painting we see four figures, two of them seated at a table playing a game of checkers. There is another individual sitting on a sofa (possibly sewing) in
the background and one individual standing in the foreground. The painting is filled with images and different activities. There is the activity of the wall with its flowered wallpaper which
sets off against the woman seated in the background whose dress is also floral, but different colors. The two individuals playing checkers appear to be men and both are dressed
in what looks to be red long johns or thermals. The woman standing is in black. The entire painting is immersed in primary colors for the most part. The
