system that have caused him to be so well remembered. Discussion In the early part of the 19th century, party politics were unknown in America; its politics were "still largely
dominated by deference" (Rise of democratic politics, 2006). That is, voters "deferred to the leadership of local elites or leading families" (Rise of democratic politics, 2006). But between 1820 and
1840 there was a "revolution" in American politics that began when most states repealed the property-ownership qualifications for voting; and when voice vote was "largely eliminated" (Rise of democratic politics,
2006). In addition, "[D]irect methods of selecting presidential electors, county officials, state judges, and governors replaced indirect methods," and not surprisingly, voting "skyrocketed" (Rise of democratic politics, 2006). The biggest
result of this reform was the rise of a two-party system that replaced the "politics of deference" (Rise of democratic politics, 2006). Jacksons campaign of 1828 was as heated as
anything today; it was also the "first to appeal directly for voter support through a professional political organization" (The presidency of Andrew Jackson, 2007). It also caught the attention of
the voting public, and twice as many voters went to the polls in 1828 as had done in 1824; and "four times as many as in 1820" (The presidency of
Andrew Jackson, 2007). Jackson swept the election, ushering in what is now called "Jacksonian democracy." Not only was this the era in which the two party system arose, it was
also the first time a presidential election had been followed enthusiastically by voters all over the country. But when Jackson got to the White House, he made other changes, not
