21 Grams, "faith runs into phantoms" (Klawans, 2003), but he misses the point that those phantoms are Jacks other personalities. This is why faith is the theme of a
movie about death and destruction of bodies and souls, why there is a loss of 21 Grams - the other. His other personalities are assimilated when Jack destroys the
souls, or separate entities, of Cristina and Paul. The movie leads us directly into the theme of being saved through integration, and how this begins with the death of
the innocent. The student might want to start at the beginning of the film, where Jacks multiple personality disorder is glossed over
like the paint on his bumper that reads "FAITH Jesus Saves." As he intended, this is a message to himself to have faith and hope at all times, that
he, Jack, can be saved, that his other personalities can be integrated, and that he can move on to those life-affirming relationships he seeks.
Jack is represented as the ex-con saved by religion and because he is a man of faith, it is constantly tested, yet these disembodied scenes are not tests, but individual,
therapeutic steps down the path of recovery. The loss of 21 grams of soul is Jack stripping himself of his other personalities, those negative personalities that run contrary to
the life he wants to create for himself - balanced, home and family. In order to do that, Jack must destroy the innocent, the illusion that he is already
saved (not in the process of being saved). This is the part of himself that has been hiding from him and he kills it.
