The two we have chosen, however, are ones operated through the Iroquois-Kankakee Regional Office of Education (http://www.ikan.k12.il.us/pfl/pfl.htm#Increased%20out-of-school) and the New York State Juvenile Delinquency Program (http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us/ofpa/juvdelprevfactsheet.htm). Though these two programs
are run by different organizations (and are, of course, in different parts of the country) both are very much adamant in supporting community involvement as a way to deter juvenile
delinquency. How important is community-based prevention and intervention when it comes to juvenile delinquency? According to Mulvey et al (2004), its very
important. The authors in this study point out that prevention of juvenile delinquency, both on a primary and secondary level, involves "identifying individuals and environments at risk for delinquent activities"
before any type of negative behavior can occur. To do this, the authors are very much in favor of family-based prevention interactive programs (such as parent training), school-based prevention programs,
social processes intervention programs and community-based intervention programs (Mulvey et al, 2004). Though the authors are not necessarily in favor of using only community programs for intervention and prevention, they
do acknowledge that targeted community-based programs can help by offering troubled youth a place to hang out, go to in event of family problems and just provide a safe, non-threatening
environment should one be needed (Mulvey et al, 2004). Based on this structure, both the school-based program and the one overseen
