of communications. As Joyce himself was fearful of ending up a perennial Dubliner (which is why he left Ireland in the first place for "The Continent"), there likely is merit
to the critical analyses of Joyce as an Irish expat who doesnt mind being one. Joyces lashing out against Ireland can also
be found in a story that has, as its main themes, death and sexuality. "The Dead," in very subliminal ways, also outlines Joyces criticism of and mockery toward the Ireland
of his youth. Comments and overview of "The Dead" "The Dead" is the final story of Joyces collection of short stories entitled
The Dubliners, which was published in 1914. "The Dead," with its frequent emphasis on a dead society peopled by glittering people, also criticizes humankinds egos, while making a statement about
the shortness of life on earth (James Joyces "The Dead"). The story takes place at a party during the Christmas season, on
Twelfth Night, the eve of Epiphany which is defined by Joyce as a sudden shining down of reason and awareness, a "sudden spiritual manifestation . . ." (Jones) The party
