his minister of propaganda, Joseph Gobbels, became one of the strongest arms and psychological weapons of the Third Reich. But who was Joseph Goebbels? Its assured that no one wakes up and determines that one day they will be responsible for the death of millions. So, one has to wonder what sorts of formative experiences, philosophies and influences went into the making of one of Hitlers most trusted inner circle. EARLY INFLUENCES AND UPBRINGING According to most records and experts, Goebbels was born into a very Catholic, very middle-class family in Rheydt, in the year 1897(Hoffman 26). Most photos and descriptions of Gobbels illustrates what must have been a troubled childhood, even though he was educated at the best of schools and the best of educators. Most of his psychological and emotional problems seem to have stemmed from the fact that he suffered terribly from Polio when he was a child, which left him crippled. Compounding this infirmity was the fact that he was also short, light of build and something of an egghead. When the Nationalistic movement began to sweep through Germany, he was again conscious of his outward appearance because he did not fit the Aryan type. He was neither big, blond or Nordic in appearance. Yet, he compensated, perhaps over compensated, with his dogmatic embrace of the philosophy of the Third Reich. However, these early experiences had left him bitter and so this hatred toward his fellow man, his utter contempt for those in lesser positions than himself (racially or politically) were marked and severe.
