to examine what, exactly, "distinctive competence" means. According to David Teece, Gary Pisano and Amy Shuen in their paper "Dynamic Capabilities and Strategic Management," distinctive competence can be defined as
". . . a set of differentiated skills, complementary assets and organizational routines which together allow a firm to coordinate a particular set of activities in a way
that provides the basis for a competitive advantage in a particular market or markets" (Keene, 2004). In other words, over its
more than a century of existence, J&J has had the ability to fit the sum of its parts together in such a way that it can remain competitive, both in
terms of innovation and in terms of response to the market. Throughout its long history, Johnson & Johnson has managed to be at the forefront of both community service and
customer appreciation - and this has helped it build a distinctive competence. Another "distinctive competence" that J&J offers is that it is
an ethical company in an era in which ethical companies are truly needed. To this day, the companys ads proclaim it proudly to be "family owned." But perhaps the strongest
story that demonstrates how J&J put ethical theory into actual practice was the Tylenol story from the early 1980s. At that time,
people in the Chicago area died as the result of ingesting Tylenol caplets, and the scare was on. People were hesitant to purchase the capsules, for obvious reasons. The company
had to do something to both find out why the capsules were killing people and to gain the publics trust once again.
