on an employee. However, not everyone behaves the same way to external stressors on the job. What separates the person who thrives on external pressure from the person who collapses
under it? One theory is that locus of control has a huge say in how severe job stress might be. Chen and Silverthorne (2008), in their study among Taiwanese accountants
and measures of job stress, indicated that individuals with a higher internal locus of control (in other words, the ability they have control over their circumstances) are likely to have
lower levels of job stress and higher levels of job satisfaction. Nor is locus of control and job stress restricted solely to the accounting profession. Salespeople, who go through
a fair amount of on-the-job stress, also rely on locus of control to deal with stress (Srivastava and Sager, 1999). One study also found that salespeople who also rely on
a problem-focused coping style end up with a stronger internal locus of control, and tend to react to stress more positively (Srivastava and Sager, 1999). Another study, this one done
among retail store managers, demonstrated that managers with inner- and other-direction and achievement orientation tends to have a positive impact on workplace stressors (Lusch and Serpkenci, 1990). Speaking of
positive, researchers have found that a personality factor impacting an individuals stressor or workplace stresses is whether he or she has a pessimistic or optimistic outlook (Shahabeddin and Boulter, 2007).
