enthusiasm for the country and the future that has yet be equaled by any American leader. Therefore, an ongoing topic of debate since his death has been what Kennedy might
have accomplished in a second term. While this area of conjecture has included Kennedys stance toward civil rights, and various other areas, the topic most addressed in this fashion
has been whether or not Kennedy would have escalated US involvement in Vietnam. Many people have argued that Kennedy would not have escalated the American commitment in Vietnam, as Johnson
did. While to a certain degree a leader can shape the course of history, it is also true that a leader has to react to historical events that
are beyond their immediate control. Therefore, an examination of the facts of Kennedys political career, rather then merely looking at the myths that have built around him, demonstrates that the
course of history was fairly well set prior to Kennedys death. This analysis will show that Kennedy would probably have escalated the Vietnam War to a certain degree, but also
that Kennedy may have tempered US involvement more than did Johnson (Goldman, 1995). From the onset of Kennedys political career, he invariably presented himself as a active proponent of
the Cold War. In other words, his stance was that he would take a hard line against Communism. He associated his name with those who criticized the Truman
administration as not taking a tough enough stand against Communism. While serving in the senate, Kennedy showed unwavering support for all of the Cold War activities conducted by the US
