Developed by Sun Microsystems, Java is a programming language designed for use in the distributed environment of the Internet (JAVA - Definition). What this means, in laymens terms, is that information is compiled faster and runs more efficiently under the just-in-time compiler versus the virtual machine interpretation (JAVA - Definition). Java is used to create complete applications that are able to run on a single computer, or can be distributed between servers in clients in a network (JAVA - Definition).
