Mukherjees novel, Jasmine, the title character immigrates to the United States in order to honor her late husbands last wishes. What she discovers there, however, is more than she bargains
for. In the end, the novel makes some startling commentary about immigration and the affects of assimilation on an individual. Shortly after arriving in the
United States as an illegal immigrant, she is taken advantage of and raped by a man named half-face. The reader shortly learns that Jasmine is a strong woman, in that
she does finally exact her revenge on this man. However, having come to a new country, all of the familiar guides and cultural cues are gone. She has no identity
and must start over to forge a new one for herself. Part of this ongoing process and journey is indicated through the various name
changes that Jasmine goes through during the novels course. Each time she changes her name, her cultural assimilation takes place. What it seems that this book is suggesting, is that
assimilation has its good side and its bad side. In one respect, it is good to acclimatize oneself to a new culture so as to facilitate survival. However, in another
respect, everything that brought solidity to an individuals life in their former country, has been stripped from them. It is as if they are asked to give up the core
essence of who they are. In many respects, there is a type of death which occurs. In the end, when one weighs the evidence, it
would seem that immigration makes the nation stronger. Most research points to the fact that immigrants continue to pay their taxes which go directly to the federal government. So, the
