in 1892 ("Tolkien," 2001). He was a philologist and writer who was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa (2001). Most know the author by his last name as he only uses
initials for his first and middle ones. In fact, J.R.R. Tolkien is best known for his fantasy fiction, but his life has been somewhat of a difficult road. With good
parents, who died tragically young, his own stint as a father was exemplary. While he endured the death of his own spouse too, Tolkien lived a good, rich life that
was focused on family and literary pursuits. There are no skeletons in this authors closet. While Tolkien was born in South Africa, he
grew up in England (Crittenden, 2001). He had moved to the Birmingham area at the age of four with his mother and younger brother Hilary, and lived there for some
years (Lyster, 2001). Although his father was supposed to join them later on, he unfortunately died of a severe hemorrhage after a bout with rheumatic fever ("The Tolkien," 2001). After
leaving South Africa, young John would never see his father again. For some time, the family lived in an old village called Sarehole,
a place that subsequently would become a part of the city suburb of Hall Green (Lyster, 2001). While growing up, this boy who would eventually become a famous author, studied
at King Edwards School as well as St Philips Grammar School (2001).The Tolkien family would go on to own homes in Wake Green Road and Duchess Road, Edgbaston as
