Since Rousseau criticizes governments, suggesting that men are in chains, it prompts me to evaluate the state of affairs. This issue is broad and goes to freedoms in general and
relates to the social contract theory. It helps to point out that Rousseau also supports the notion that government is important, but freedom is vital. It seems that Rousseau
deplores the fact that men are imprisoned by their governments, something that perhaps spurred the writing in the first place. Rousseau would likely be a libertarian today. He would see
governmental intervention as something that should be minimal. Yet, the larger population often agrees with tough on crime arguments, despite the fact that the actions will see an individual
deprived of liberty due to the fact that he has broken a law. Should people be deprived of liberty if they are criminal? Should they be deprived of freedoms even
if they are law abiding citizens? A thoughtful reaction might yield an affirmative on both counts. Many people do not mind giving up their freedoms today, but this is largely
due to the fact that they believe they are trading freedom for safety. In part, they are. But it seems that the government does appear to be restrictive in situations
where it is not warranted. There are many areas where it seems as if people are not free. Since 9/11, for instance, there are many stories about how the government
mistreats people. One example is that shortly after the terrorist attacks, when tension was high, a story came out in the news suggesting that a woman at an airline was
forced to drink her own breast milk before boarding a plane. There is a law against illegal searches and seizures in the United States for example, and while her
