When dead Lance Armstrong will undoubtedly be remembered just as he wants to be remembered: "With an American flag on my back and the star of
Texas on my helmet" (1). Armstong, however, is far from dead. His repeated victories in the Tour de France testifies to that fact perhaps more than anything else.
That victory is particularly phenomenal, however, given Armstrongs long fight against cancer. It stands in testament to the tremendous fortitude of a man and of the human body in
general. Armstrongs fight has been intense. He describes his experience with cancer as "being run off the road by a truck" (2).
That too he has experiences with but the scars from the cancer, both the emotional scars and the physical ones, are undoubtedly much deeper. He tells us in
"Its Not About the Bike" that his scars include a "puckered wound" just above his heart, one running from his groin to his upper thigh, and two "deep half-moons" in
his scalp (2). The scars all testify to the heroic efforts that surgeons have taken to counteract the ravages of cancer on Armstrongs body but the real heroics are
attributable to the man and to the body itself! Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer when he was only twenty-five years old.
He was given less than a forty percent chance of surviving. Three years later he won the Tour de France for the first time! His recovery was not
