One of Italys major political
problems, which has plagued its development throughout its history, is that it has always been something of a fragmented country, with separate states attempting to maintain and promote their own
interests at the expense of national unity. This fragmentation can be seen particularly in the socio-economic disparity between the northern and southern regions of the country.
However, in recent years, despite the rapid changes in governments and the political scandals and corruption which have
undermined successive administrations, the country is now beginning to move towards a more unified and democratic stability within the parameters of the European community as a whole.
Italy became a member of NATO and the EEC, which later became the EU, during the years following the
second World War. During the 1970s, the communist terrorist group, the Red Brigades, was significantly active in Italy and undermined the countrys political stability for some time. It was not
until the early 1980s that these left-wing movements were finally brought under control. There was a long period during which Italy was ruled by the Christian Democrat party; this was
terminated as a result of revelations that many members of the party, and also several senior civil servants, were members of a secret Masonic lodge.
