in organized crimes and while they may all share the fact that they are organized crime syndicates, they are ultimately also very different in their involvement and their approach to
that involvement. Two fo the most powerful organized crime groups are Italians and Russians. The following paper examines them both while also comparing and contrasting the two. Italian
and Russian Organized Crime The beginning of Russian organized crime is normally traced back to the economy that was run by the state
which essentially left many people in need of basic goods (Burton; Burges, 2007). As a result, "Small groups of entrepreneurs emerged to provide items otherwise not available - and the
black market was born" (Burton; Burges, 2007). Then as Russia began its transformation towards the Russian Rederation "organized crime was called upon to facilitate reform in the region - and
the line between business and the criminal underworld became significantly more blurred, perhaps even nonexistent" (Burton; Burges, 2007). It seems that Russian organized crime was essentially left alone as the
nation moved forward in light of the fact that the government felt any strong approach to organized crime would somehow create problems in their shift towards capitalism (Burton; Burges, 2007).
In relationship to Italian organized crime the story is quite different for it is essentially based in a very rich and long
history. One author notes the following: "These enterprises evolved over the course of 3,000 years during numerous periods of invasion and exploitation by numerous conquering armies in Italy. Over the
