political structure and economic philosophy. Located in Southern Europe on the Italian Peninsula, the country is in close geographic proximity to France and Switzerland as well as to Austria
and Slovenia. Not only does it share its borders with these countries, it shares a close geographic relationship with much of Europe. This fact has had a definite
influence on the politics in Italy in particular. The country has had a strong influence from many European countries as they at one time or another claimed all or
part of Italy as their territory. Italys own colonial empire, in fact, was influential in shaping the political structure of the country to a degree. Each of these
influences played either a minor roll or a very strong one in shaping Italy into the democratic republic that it is today. Italy
is, of course, considered one of the most modernized of world countries. This modernization occurred over time in response to each of the various stimuli the country was feeling
from inside its borders and from outside of those borders at specific points in time. Home to the Roman Empire, Rome was at the center of Western Civilization since
very early in the countrys history. The Renaissance was a particularly important factor in the modernization of the country. The Baroque movement itself was grounded in Italy. It
wouldnt be until the nineteenth century, however, that the country was finally united into one cohesive entity and the country would finally be rid of the Austrian domination that it
had endured for centuries. Religion, in particular, has been a driving force in the political and cultural evolution of Italy.
