participants in this venture should have a thorough understanding of the ways in which the new host country and culture differs from Americans orientation or business practices. A useful tool
for accomplishing this goal is provided by Geert Hofstedes cultural dimensions (GHCDs), which can be used to directly compare five fundamental aspects of culture. The following report uses these dimensions
in order to compare and contrast US and Italian business practices and business culture. However, before examining Italian business culture, it is helpful to have an overview of the GHCDs.
Geert Hofstedes cultural dimensions The first GHCD is the Power Distance Index (PDI), which refers to the extent that "less powerful members of organizations and institutions...accept and expect that
power is distributed unequally" (GHCD, 2003). Individualism (IDV) is a category that refers to whether or not the culture of a country tends to favor individualism. In individualistic countries, such
as the US, ties between individuals are loose, with a huge focus on personal responsibility. On the other end of this spectrum are societies that are collectivist in nature, in
which the emphasis is on integration into strong, cohesive groups, such as extended families (GHCD, 2003). The next dimension is also dichotomous in nature, as it contrasts the cultural features
of prescribed gender roles. Societies that express a high degree of masculinity (MAS), as versus femininity. High MAS cultures are aggressive, while feminine cultures are characterized as "modest" and "caring"
(GHCD, 2003). In each type of country, men and women tend to display aspects of their cultures major gender orientation, as women in MAS countries are also "assertive and competitive,"
