The essay then traces immigration laws and policies from 1882, when the first immigration law was enacted. The writer then reports existing immigration policies and their effects on Italians and Mexicans. The essay ends with a conclusion that discusses three major findings in the research. Even with the controversies regarding immigration laws and policies, this is still a country that offers refuge to the politically, religious and socially oppressed in the world, although there
is now a limit on the numbers of those seeking asylum. There were no immigration laws until 1882 and that was an exclusionary law that prohibited Chinese from entering
the country. The next restriction would not be seen until 1917 when literacy was required. Since then, there have been a number of immigration acts adopted that included quotas and
limits on the numbers of immigrants of different backgrounds. What was life really like for immigrants? Were all immigrants accepted into the society alike or were some favored over others?
How did immigrants assimilate themselves into the society? These are questions that have been addressed in volumes and volumes of documents of all kinds and sizes. This essay looks
at two groups of immigrants, Italians and Mexicans. There are similarities between the groups, their immigration patterns, and their experiences and there are vast differences. For instance, quotas set had
a direct impact on Italians trying to migrate from the southern portion of Italy but had no effect on Mexican emigration. Mexican immigration was directly affected by seesawing policies and
attitudes. Hostilities broke out almost immediately between Italian immigrants and Irish immigrants because they were competing for the same lower wage jobs. Hostilities broke out more slowly between Mexican immigrants
