lives with demons relating to his own identity, the identity of his family, and the identity of his Istanbul. In this story the narrator attempts to come to terms with his identity through a return to Istanbul and a return to his childhood, his past, through the eyes of a grown man. Pamuk has an incredibly intricate relationship with Istanbul, his family, and his childhood, all connected perhaps with one type of demon or another. Throughout his work he offers the reader many images, often chaotic and scattered images, that fully illustrate his need for understanding an identity that is not separate from his relations or his city, no matter how far he has traveled in his life. Personal Identity In the very beginning of the novel the narrator speaks of how he has always felt there was another one of him, somewhere in the city, somewhere in his realm, a boy he never met, but a boy/individual who constantly seemed to haunt him, yet also give him hope perhaps? It is his personal demon, his own connection with the people, himself, the city, and his family. He states, "Somewhere in the streets of Istanbul, in a house resembling ours, there lived another Orhan so much like me that he could pass for my twin, even my double" (Pamuk, 2006; 3). This image is presented to him through a painting that was in his familys home, a boy that his aunt would tell him was actually a picture of him, although he knew this was not true.
