Just as quickly as they can convey to a person information about their personal identity, they can be hit by a truck and sent to the hospital to live a life as a vegetable. If someone by the name of John, who has a Mastercard and owns a Mercedes, is brain dead and on life support, has his identity really changed? Is he still John Smith even though he cannot think, or is he someone else? It is hard to say. What contributes the most to ones sense of self identity is arguable. A student asks a more provocative question: "What makes you certain that you are the same person today that you were in the past?" It is a good question, though one that most people do not ordinarily contemplate. Although one has a consciousness, is one really remembering what occurred to them specifically? How does one know who they really are? According to a student, Sartre claims that identity is "something you create for yourself through choice and commitment." In other words, one makes their identity through choices. This is a commonly held assumption because one does make certain choices in life. They make communion and choose a new middle name. They go to school, and their degree is attached to that name. They get a driver license, dye their hair, pierce their nose and so forth. Each thing they do adds to their own personal identity. Yet, for the Buddhist, identity is just an illusion. It is the ego that gets in the way of finding ones true self. For Marx and Hegel on the other hand, identity is seen as a social phenomenon and people are defined by the social classes that they inhabit. ...
