of deviance from our society today and apply his concepts. Many have come to think about deviance as something that violates the norm. Yet, different sociologists have different views
on the matter. In looking at deviance through Durkheims eyes, which is essentially the functional perspective, one can see how deviance as normal may be applicable. Deviance serves a
function so it is something that is perhaps needed. Also, the concept of deviance is relative to the culture and subculture it invades. Deviance can be functional and one
can see this in a variety of examples. For instance, rites of passage in any society may be considered deviant to another culture or to the society itself under certain
conditions. At a bachelor party, a man about to be married may be forgiven for untoward, or deviant, behavior. These behaviors may not be acceptable under any other conditions but
society sanctions rituals and rites of passage. Yet, these rites serve as functions in the society. Thus, deviance may be functional. This is most often expressed in group solidarity as
opposed to individual behaviors. Sometimes the function is latent in that it may not be seen right away or not be expressed in a direct cause and effect relationship.
Also, the function need not be positive or nurturing. Certainly, Durkheim would see deviance as a phenomenon that is alive in society today as it was when he wrote
about it. Deviance is still alive and well in todays society, perhaps even more than when the author wrote. How would Durkheim view specific deviant behaviors or situations? One
type of deviance is criminality. Thus, a shoplifter would be considered deviant. In fact Durkheim regards the criminal as someone who lives at the expense of solidarity (Jones, 1981).
