A 5 page research paper that address three issues in criminal justice administration in the US. These issues address the realities of an increasingly large prison population, the corresponding overcrowding in prisons and the decline in rehabilitation programs, which may be a trend that is beginning to reverse. If these current trends in criminal justice administration continue, it paints a dark picture for the future, as the demands of maintaining the criminal justice system will continue to be increasingly exorbitant and the socioeconomic repercussions of long-term incarceration will continue to plague certain demographic groups, particularly lower-income black neighborhoods. US than in any other democratic state in the world. Current, there are 1.3 million federal prisoners, with an additional 2 million individuals held in state prisons and local jails
(Clear, 2003). If these figures continue to grow as they have over the last several decades by the time people born today reach their thirtieth birthdays, there will be over
7 million prisoners in the US, and, if local jails, are counted more than 10 million people locked on any given day (Clear, 2003). The rational answer to such a
thought experiment is to point out that state and local government can barely afford to support the prisoner population as now stands, so such an expenditure seems impossible. Also, it
brings up the question as to "What kind of society could justify locking up so many of its young men," who are the principle demographic behind bars (Clear, 2003,
p. 18). The so-called "war on crime" began thirty years ago. At that time, if an expert had announced that the prison population would grow by 600 percent
