Matters of sexual orientation gain increasing attention, however, as businesses strive to deal with issues arising with greater frequency. Michael/Michelle Doctors and nurses share locker rooms and showers according to gender at ABC Hospital, where Michael is an operating room nurse. After an extended leave of absence, Michael returns as Michelle, the result of a sex-change operation. "The women who knew Michelle as Michael refuse to share their locker room with Michelle, and the men dont want Michelle in their locker room. What should ABC Hospital do?" If the hospital furnishes shower facilities for some of its surgical staff, then it must provide those facilities for all of its surgical staff (Dunn, 2000). Those in surgery need to have areas in which they can change all of their clothes, so eliminating the locker and shower room is not an option. Neither is blocking Michelle from having access to the hospitals facilities. In any other setting (i.e., one not involving nurses), the business should listen to the majoritys complaints and seek to find a solution on which everyone can agree. If such agreement is not possible, then employees must accept conditions that laws dictate. This approach is rather straightforward at any other type of business, but the ongoing nursing shortage further complicates ABCs position. Management cannot afford to be heavy-handed in the matter, because any nurse could walk off the job in the morning and likely have other employment by afternoon. ...
