might prevent a counselor from developing the strong rapport necessary? How might these barriers be overcome? The general purpose of psychological counseling is to engage in sessions of open
communication that not only reveal insights into the clients psychological state, but also enable the client to deeply examine his or her own relationship to this psychological state, and eventually,
through this examination, gain an understanding that can lead to self-improvement. One of the cornerstones of the practice, then, is counselors establishing rapport with clients, so that clients feel comfortable
in the communication process. This presents certain key problems because there is a very real argument that establishing a meaningful emotional rapport with drug addicted clients may be impossible. This
being the case, the question of whether or not talk therapy for drug addicted clients is useful is worthy of examination. According to a 2009 study by Hagedorn and Hirshhorn,
"traditional talk therapy... is often ineffective when working with addicted clients" because of the emotional repression strategies employed by addicts, among other reasons (Hagedorn & Hirshhorn, 2009). This is particularly
true of cognitive behavioral therapy strategies, which have proven so effective for the handling of neuroses (Hagedorn & Hirshhorn, 2009). This study, however, asserts that these barriers might be overcome
by "tapping into the power of the group modality", such that addicted clients have the opportunity to identify not just with the counselor but with other addicted clients, so that
the typical emotional repression strategies are mirrored, and become less valid (Hagedorn & Hirshhorn, 2009). 2. Motivational interviewing is based on the assumption that ?denial? is not a
