of a people, of a village, of Abame. When the story is finished both the characters of Uchendu and Okonkwo react to this story. With Uchendu we see the man
detailing why these people foolish to kill a man who did not speak. However, with Okonkwo we see almost a foreshadowing of his destiny in his response as he states,
"They were fools....They had been warned that danger was ahead" (Achebe 140). Throughout the story of Okonkwo he is subtly warned here and there that disaster will befall him if
he does not pay heed. And, that is perhaps the story that would be told of Okonkwos misadventures. In addition, it is likely that the reactions would be incredibly similar
as those of Uchendu and Okonkwo for it is always easier to see and understand the moral of something after it has happened than it is to see when one
is within the tale itself. Okonkwos Suicide It is likely that Achebe expects the reader to see truth and feel sympathy in the suicide of Okonkwo. He
is a man whose village and society is no longer what he knows. When he returns after his exile he cannot fit in. He essentially has no people and why
that is a powerful tragedy, it is a truth that has happened throughout time, over and over, as one culture envelopes another. Okonkwo was a man who could not make
the adjustments and he felt that there was no place in the world that he knew of, where he belonged. He had no people and he had no future. For
him the most noble way out of it all was through suicide. In the opinion of this particular reader and writer Achebe was merely stating truths that all people
