in a "higher" position power over those lower down. Thats a long-winded way of saying that everybody has a boss, and the boss has the power to tell subordinates what
to do. Sometimes the power is abused, but mostly it works, and companies like Boeing, which has a workforce of 159,000 and five separate business units (Choppala, 2007), this power
structure is absolutely necessary. Politics within Boeing is seen as the way power is used to create favorable outcomes; again, this definition applies to any company (Choppala, 2007). At Boeing,
unfortunately, office politics isnt paying off very well, since the company is losing some of its market share to Airbus, which stepped in to fill a perceived need for much
larger aircraft (Choppala, 2007). Boeing is now in the position of reacting to market forces instead of being an active participant, driving things forward (Choppala, 2007). It has manufactured superior
aircraft for decades, but is now losing ground (Choppala, 2007). One of the reasons why politics isnt working here may be the ouster of Harry Stonecipher, CEO of Boeing, over
alleged ethical violations (Holmes, 2005). Its alleged that Stonecipher was having an affair with another Boeing executive, and one might speculate that his attention was on his personal life when
he should have been concentrating on countering the threats to Boeing. Thats a gross oversimplification, of course, but it indicates that at times, politics can have a devastating effect on
