people to behave with extreme violence when the vast majority are well behaved? What are the issues that might help us understand these acts? One source suggests a connection among
violence, masculinity and the mass media. A school shooting in Germany in 2002, perpetrated by a 19-year old male that resulted in 19 dead including the shooter, prompted a stunned
spectator to say "Germany is America now" (Kivel & Johnson, 2009, p. 109). The remark emphasizes the amount of violence in society in general and the increase in "youth on
youth" violence, exemplified by school shootings around the world that has increased over the last decade (Kivel & Johnson, 2009). In addition to school shootings, "there has also been
an increase in murders committed by people who explicitly acknowledge the influence of media" (Kivel & Johnson, 2009, p. 109). It should be noted that school shootings are very rare,
but because they are so unexpected and so horrific, they get a great deal of media coverage. This is not to lessen the impact of these events or trivialize them,
but to point out that the media will always pay a great deal of attention to matters that are scandalous, sensational or violent. To return to the idea of
the media influencing behavior, the same year as the German school shooting, a "17-year old French male stabled a female while wearing a mask from the popular movie Scream. In
addition, more than 10 male teenagers have murdered friends and family members in North America and in Europe while wearing Scream masks or because of having watched the film numerous
