just experienced their 37th consecutive year of profitability (Southwest Airlines, Fact Sheet, 2010). Meanwhile, other airlines are struggling. Net income in 2009 totaled $99 million, a very strong showing for
net income. While other companies were holding back on hiring these last few years, Southwest hired 831 new employees in 2009 (Southwest Airlines, Fact Sheet, 2010). They are the recipient
of numerous awards. Examples include Fortune Magazine list of most admired companies, awards for overall highest score for performance and value, one of the best leadership, best low cost/no frills
airline; and best consumer on time estimates and those are just a few (Southwest Airlines, Fact Sheet, 2010). These are all very impressive. How they treat their employees is also
very impressive. This company has two mission statements, one for consumers and one for employees. The one for employees states: "We are committed to provide our Employees a stable work
environment with equal opportunity for learning and personal growth. Creativity and innovation are encouraged" (Southwest Airlines, 1988). Southwests management receives an A for the way is has consistently crafted
strategies. Just based on the rewards, awards and recognition the company has received is evidence of the fact that they have a winning strategy. It has the lowest ratio of
complaints in the industry, it ranked 2nd in Business Weeks top best companies for leadership, it is at the top of the list for best places to work, it was
